We've been running Google Summer of Code™ for four years now, and each year gets better and better. Competition was fierce for 2008, as we received nearly 7,100 applications, almost 1,000 more than last year. We welcomed over 800 more student applicants from over 1,300 colleges and universities. We're also pleased to see that the program is growing geographically; we had participants from 90 countries in 2007, and this year we'll be hacking out with folks from 98 countries around the globe.
Today we're pleased to let you know that we're funding 1125 student developers, almost 25% more students than last year, who will work to improve over 175 Free and Open Source Projects over the next few months. Check out the program website for more details on each participating student and mentoring organization.
For those of you who aren't participating in the program, now is a great time to continue working on your project ideas and learning about Free and Open Source. Each participating project is well placed to provide you with assistance in getting up to speed as a new contributor; take advantage of this opportunity to fix some bugs, hone your skills and, if you'd like, prepare for future instances of the program.
Congratulations to all students whose proposals were accepted, and many thanks to all of our applicants. The community bonding period starts today, and we'd love to hear from all of you how you plan to spend this time getting ready to start coding in six weeks. Feel free to post a comment and share your thoughts.

Thanks LH and all the team for running again such a great program.
I'm glad to participate again on it, and hope that this year will be at least as succesful as the last one :-)
GSoC is great and Google Open Source Office is doing an amazing job bringing so many projects to GSoC this year. I'm happy to mentor for NUI Group and I'm looking forward to see what open source code will be brought to all of us during the summer. Congratulations to all accepted students! Keep up the good work.
Many thanks to Google team for this great opportunity for students around the world.
Best,

Wow, that puts the total student + org payout at over $5.6 million. Thanks to Open Source Team for continuing to support the program!
Cool thanks.
Lots of work went into selecting 1125 projects, and
$2.0M + $3.0M + $4.5M + $5.6M is a significant contribution.
The community bonding period is a great time to flesh out implementation details with the mentoring organization. I plan to spend the time finalizing project specifications and detailing a few use cases.
Thanks for accepting my proposal "Implementing a Translation Interface for Gallery2" (http://www.johndbritton.com/node/8).
It is a huge encouragement from Google. I am returning participant working on the same project which I could not complete last year and I am aiming to complete this year.
I know,it is going to be a enjoyable year ahead for me.
Thanks,
Senthil
Is there a way to see a map with the locations of all the students?
Thanks Google for organizing this wonderful event. This will encourage more and more people to join with open source communities in each an every year.
This is a great chance for all of us in case of polishing the software engineering skills whilst serving the open source communities.
So the importance of taking part in such events is uncountable. We all as students should thank google and other supporting groups for their kind effort to serve the open source community.
